Ash Wednesday is the first Wednesday in March this year marking the beginning of Lent. Lent is the 40 day period between Ash Wednesday and Easter, not including Sundays. Growing up in the church, there seems to be an unending smorgasbord of ideas on how to prepare for Easter. They mostly fall into two different types of preparation: Disciplines of Abstinence (or giving things up).  From chocolate and Facebook to caffeine and food, people give up lots of different things citing that these things get in the way of their relationship with God. Then there’s Disciplines of Commitment (or adding spiritual behaviors to your routine). People will attempt to add morning devotions or a strict prayer time or acts of service to their routines in an effort to draw closer to Christ. All efforts are honorable when compared to no effort at all. Beware, though, to not inflate yourself in the process thinking that you are more spiritual than non-participants. That would in fact be one of the temptations in the Desert, wouldn’t it?  Let’s worship together with a kickoff to Lent Wednesday, March 6, 7pm following soup and salad at 6pm.
