February is the month of love, the Superbowl, and ashes. For those participating in the God Story, it’s also the beginning. In the beginning, God so loved that he created paradise with humans as the pinnacle of creation. Just like the Patriots, there is a tremendous devastation to the Fall of humankind. See what I did there? The punishment is ashes, our imminent end. We will surely die and return to ashes. Is this a moment to mourn or a moment to enjoy the fleeting time we have? Ashes at the beginning of Lent reminds us of our sin that causes mortality and the forgiveness granted to us through Jesus Christ. It is indeed a joy surrounded by sadness…life surrounded by death. It is the hope we have when all seems hopeless! Let’s do life together.
